What To Do Before You Arrive

Knowing what steps to take before reaching the Cambridge dentist can help protect your teeth.

If a Tooth Is Knocked Out

Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently with water if dirty. Try placing it back into the socket if possible. If not, store it in milk or saliva. Seek dental care immediately.

If a Tooth Is Broken

Rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible.

If You Have Swelling

Rinse gently with warm salt water. Apply a cold compress externally. Contact our office promptly.

If a Filling or Crown Falls Out

Keep the restoration if possible. Avoid chewing on that side. Schedule an appointment for evaluation.

These steps do not replace professional care, but they may help reduce discomfort until you arrive.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Emergency dentistry focuses on identifying the cause of pain or damage and creating a treatment plan.

Severe Toothache

Persistent tooth pain may indicate decay, infection, or nerve irritation. Pain that wakes you at night or worsens when chewing should be evaluated.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A chipped or cracked tooth can expose sensitive inner layers. Even if pain is mild, prompt evaluation can prevent further damage.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A tooth that has been completely knocked out requires urgent attention. Acting quickly increases the chance of saving the tooth.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown falls out, the tooth may feel sensitive or rough. Temporary protection and evaluation can help prevent further issues.

Swelling or Abscess

Swelling in the gums or face may indicate infection. Dental infections should be assessed promptly to reduce complications.

Common Dental Emergencies & What to Do

When something goes wrong with a tooth, a few steps in the first hour can make a real difference before you reach us. What follows is first aid, not a replacement for being seen. If you have swelling that is spreading, trouble breathing, or a serious facial injury, go to your nearest emergency room first. Call us once you are stable.

Severe Toothache

Rinse gently with warm water and floss around the sore tooth to clear any trapped food. A cold compress against the outside of the cheek helps with swelling. Do not hold aspirin against the gum, since it can burn the tissue. Pain that keeps coming back usually means decay, an infection, or an irritated nerve, so call (519) 621-2111 and we will take a look.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown, the part you normally chew with, and never by the root. Do not scrub it. Rinse off any dirt with water, and if you can manage it, ease the tooth back into the socket and bite down on clean gauze. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or your own saliva and bring it along. Time matters here. The sooner we see you, the better the odds of saving the tooth.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Rinse with warm water and tuck any fragments into a small container. A cold compress keeps swelling down, and you can cap a sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum if it is catching on your tongue or cheek. Even a small chip can open up the sensitive layers underneath, so it is worth getting it checked before it gets worse.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a crown comes off, keep it and stop chewing on that side. A dab of clove oil settles the sensitivity, and an over-the-counter dental cement can cover the area for a day or two. Bring the crown to your visit. We can often re-cement the same one rather than make a new one.

Abscess or Swelling

An abscess is a pocket of infection. It often shows up as a sore, pimple-like bump on the gum, a bad taste, or swelling in the face. Rinse with mild salt water for a bit of relief, but do not try to drain it yourself. Dental infections can spread, so call us right away.

Soft-Tissue Injury

Cuts to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums can bleed a lot, more than they look like they should. Rinse with mild salt water, then hold clean gauze or a moist tea bag against the spot for fifteen to twenty minutes. If the bleeding will not stop, seek urgent medical care.

When to Seek Emergency Care vs. Wait

It is not always clear whether a tooth needs to be seen today or can wait for a regular appointment. The short version: severe pain, bleeding that will not settle, swelling you can see, or a tooth that has been knocked out or badly broken all warrant a call now. If you are unsure, phone us and describe what is going on. We will help you figure out the next step.

These usually mean you should reach out the same day:

Pain that wakes you at night or is not eased by over-the-counter reliefSwelling in the gums, face, or jawA knocked-out, loosened, or pushed-out toothA large fracture that exposes the inner toothBleeding that continues after steady pressureA fever paired with mouth or facial swelling

Other things are usually less urgent and can wait a day or two, though it is still worth getting them looked at before they turn into something bigger:

A small chip with no painMild, brief sensitivity to hot or coldA lost filling or crown with little discomfortMinor food packing between teeth

Trust your gut. Catching a problem early often means simpler, more comfortable treatment, and we are glad to talk it through over the phone. Call (519) 621-2111 and we will get you in as soon as we can.
