What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses controlled methods to help patients relax during treatment. It helps most when you feel anxious, have a sensitive gag reflex, or are in for a longer appointment.

At Riverfront Dental, we provide mild sedation using nitrous oxide. You stay awake and able to respond the whole time. You just feel noticeably calmer.

We do not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia. If you need a deeper level of sedation, we are glad to talk through a referral.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Our Mild Sedation Option

Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas you breathe in through a small, soft mask that rests over your nose. Mixed with oxygen, it brings on a light, relaxed feeling within minutes.

What patients like about it:

Works fast and is easy to adjustYou stay awake and responsiveWears off within minutesDrive yourself home afterwardWorks for many children and adults

Because the effects fade so quickly, nitrous oxide is one of the easiest ways to take the edge off dental anxiety.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation?

Mild sedation with nitrous oxide may be a good fit if you have:

Dental anxiety or nervousnessA strong gag reflexTrouble sitting for longer visitsSensitivity to sounds or sensationsDifficulty getting fully numb

It also helps a lot of children settle during treatment. We go over your health history at your visit to make sure sedation is right for you.

What to Expect

Before

We go over your medical history and explain how nitrous oxide works. There is usually nothing special you need to do to get ready.

During

A small mask delivers a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. You breathe normally and feel calm while we adjust the level to suit you.

After

You breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the gas. The effects fade quickly, and most patients head back to their day right away.

Your Comfort

You stay awake and in control the whole time. Tell us at any point if you want us to pause or adjust.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for decades and is one of the safest forms of sedation. It is gentle and well tolerated, and our team keeps an eye on you throughout treatment.

Side effects are uncommon and usually mild. The gas leaves your system quickly, so there is little to no lingering drowsiness. It is not the right choice in a few situations, which is why we always go over your health history first.

You Are Not Alone: Dental Anxiety Is Common

If the thought of a dental appointment makes you uneasy, you are in good company. Plenty of people feel some nervousness about the dentist, and for some that worry is enough to put off care entirely. The trouble is, waiting tends to let small problems grow into bigger ones, and that makes the next visit feel even harder.

Feeling anxious does not have to keep you from a healthy smile. We listen, we explain each step in plain language, and we move at a pace that works for you. Mild sedation with nitrous oxide is one of the gentlest tools we have for helping nervous patients relax. Whether it has been six months or several years since your last visit, you are welcome here, no judgment, and we will keep the appointment calm.

A lot of patients tell us that one comfortable appointment changes how they feel about the dentist for good. Once the fear eases, regular check-ups and cleanings get much easier to keep up with, and that is what protects your teeth over the long run.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

You breathe nitrous oxide in through a small, soft mask that rests over your nose. As you breathe normally, the gas blends with oxygen and brings on a light, pleasant calm, often within a few minutes. Some patients describe a mild tingling or a warm, floaty feeling. Others just notice their worries fade into the background and the appointment goes by faster than they expected.

You stay fully awake the whole time. You can talk with us, follow simple requests, and tell us how you are doing. The level is easy to fine-tune, so we adjust it moment to moment to keep you comfortable. When treatment is done, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes, the gas clears, and the relaxed feeling fades. There is so little left behind that most patients drive themselves home and get on with their day without any grogginess.

Is Nitrous Oxide a Good Fit for You?

Mild sedation suits a lot of patients and situations. It tends to help if any of these sound familiar:

You feel anxious or fearful about dental treatmentYou have a strong or sensitive gag reflexYou find it hard to get fully numb with local anesthetic aloneYou are in for a longer or more involved appointmentYou have trouble sitting still or staying comfortable in the chairSounds, sensations, or past experiences make visits stressful

Nitrous oxide is a great option for uneasy children too. It is gentle and well tolerated, and it helps young patients relax so that early dental care gets done calmly under our team's supervision. Worried adult or nervous child, the aim is the same: a comfortable visit that builds trust for the years ahead.

It is not the right choice for everyone. A few medical conditions rule it out, which is why we always go over your full health history before your appointment. If you are not sure whether sedation is right for you, talk it through with our team and we will plan the safest, most comfortable approach.

Procedures Where Sedation Can Help

Mild sedation can go alongside many kinds of treatment whenever a little extra comfort would make the visit easier. Patients often reach for nitrous oxide during:

Tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth removalLonger restorative visits such as fillings or crown preparationCleanings and check-ups when nerves get in the wayTreatment for patients with a sensitive gag reflexAppointments where staying relaxed and still helps

You do not need a complicated procedure planned to ask about sedation. If nerves are the main thing holding you back, even a routine cleaning feels easier with a little help to relax. Just let us know when you book and we can talk through whether nitrous oxide fits your visit.

Comparing Sedation Options

Dentistry uses several levels of sedation, from very mild to deep. Knowing the differences can help you feel more confident about your care:

Nitrous Oxide (Our Focus)

Inhaled mild sedation that keeps you awake and responsive. It takes effect and wears off quickly, so most patients drive themselves home. This is what we provide at Riverfront Dental.

Oral Sedation

A prescribed pill taken before the appointment that brings a deeper sense of relaxation. It usually means someone has to drive you to and from your visit, and we do not provide it in-house.

IV Sedation & General Anesthesia

Deeper sedation given and monitored by specially trained providers, usually for complex surgical cases. We do not provide these at our clinic, but we are glad to discuss a referral when deeper care makes sense.

We focus on gentle, mild sedation, and nitrous oxide is the right fit for most anxious patients. If you think you may need a deeper option, let us know. We will look at your needs and point you to the right care.
